At its simplest, Anna Karenina is a love story。 It is a portrait of a beautiful and intelligent woman whose passionate love for a handsome officer sweeps aside all other ties - to her marriage and to the network of relationships and moral values that bind the society around her。 The love affair of Anna and Vronsky is played out alongside the developing romance of Kitty and Levin, and in the character of Levin, closely based on Tolstoy himself, the search for happiness takes on a deeper philosophical significance。

One of the greatest novels ever written, Anna Karenina combines penetrating psychological insight with an encyclopedic depiction of Russian life in the 1870s。 The novel takes us from high society St Petersburg to the threshing fields on Levin's estate, with unforgettable scenes at a Moscow ballroom, the skating rink, a race course, a railway station。 It creates an intricate labyrinth of connections that is profoundly satisfying, and deeply moving。

Rosamund Bartlett's translation conveys Tolstoy's precision of meaning and emotional accuracy in an English version that is highly readable and stylistically faithful。 Like her acclaimed biography of Tolstoy, it is vivid, nuanced, and compelling。

When the author tries to capture all aspects of life in one book, not elaborating on any specific aspect, we get Anna Karenina。

Glad I finally read it。 I wouldn’t read it again, but there were some great thought provoking themes, topics, and things written here。

listening to this book much more than I thought I would, it’s definitely a book I’d like to reread later on to further dissect it。 I really enjoyed the scene where kitty was obsessed and in love with varenka and madam stahl and could only see the good in them until her father burst the bubble of purity, I feel like this also may be to an extent vronsky to anna before he was this gran I forgot to write down my thoughts as reading this until like chapter 12 in the 3rd partBut so far I really enjoy listening to this book much more than I thought I would, it’s definitely a book I’d like to reread later on to further dissect it。 I really enjoyed the scene where kitty was obsessed and in love with varenka and madam stahl and could only see the good in them until her father burst the bubble of purity, I feel like this also may be to an extent vronsky to anna before he was this grand escape he’s perfect where he is as that but as more as leaving her husband for him what of that idk maybe just theory。 Also I really am fascinated by how karenin is like he’s so deeply like conditioned to not be jealous and act off of emotions he ends up biting himself in the butt like he just is so used to ignoring how he feels to do things logistically and I think this is a critique on that in part to show how it’s important to not get too carried away on emotional highs but also not restrain yourself from feeling such highs。 Levins peasant experience… After looking toward some analysis it may just be simple he goes toward the earth to give him purpose now that his former life’s purpose is gone。 Karenins dislike for crying really shows that he is so emotionally repressed that to even see someone let go of their emotions he loses respect for them。 Scary。 I identify with Anna’s all or nothing nature and can see where her struggles come from regarding what in ways is the best case scenario for other people wong work for her。 I like that levin has his own beliefs and doesn’t conform under a group。 Tolstoy writes life and thoughts so well I love the moment that vronsky doesn’t like the prince because it shows a mirror of himself at himself it’s fascinating to see this portrayed through his Ikk writing。 In the end of part 3 and the beginning of part 4 we really begin to see vronsky as a man rather than this savior that was previously put on a pedistal due to Anna’s strong feelings toward him。 With the withholding of information regarding what his friend said about women and his internal critique of Anna’s irritability and her body when she is pregnant with his baby。 It shows how he too isn’t seeing Anna as a perfect being he is in love with anymore she is becoming more human to him。 And it shows he isn’t above men in general this body critique of the woman he loves while pregnant exemplifies how he isn’t so different than other men。 Also it was pointed out to me that through the way vronsky approaches his finances and moral qualms such as lying only to women parellels karenins methodical approach to his feelings… I predict that through the book they will grow more similar as Anna and levins more passionate approach to life will be shown more prominently。 Oblonsky is a seducer。 I love it。 Levin is so blinded by love it really is a slice of life to hear how he sees so happily through love goggles。 I feel connected to him in this part of the book。 I love the blissful daze he is in while at the beginning of his new found marriage with kitty。 I love the passionate and careless way he loves which is in stark contrast with Karenin。 Karen in thougj did surprise me with his generosity toward Anna especially accepting putting asside his own honor to allow her to be happy。 Vronsky realizing his unhappiness due to the lack of desire once he finally gets to have Anna fully the way he’s always wanted is a very human moment I feel to put someone or somethjng on a pedestal as if that will solve every problem and make u happy and when u get it feeling underwlmed Bc u don’t feel those intense emotions u thought u would。 I LOVE the part with the artist when they visit I like how as with vronsky and his love the artist also is so consumed with his art piece but when he finishes it it’s like it never happened I love how it really gets in the mind of an artist like the way that u can see every flaw when it’s ur own piece the feeling of being completely consumed by a creation and afterwards forgetting all about the appeal。 Super interesting the social commentary having levin confess that he doubts the existance of god so he can get married it brings to our minds how much of religion is spirituality and how much of it is for apoearances。 Awwwww Seryozha baby my heart。 I found dolly visiting anna and romanizing Anna’s lifr rather than her own only to see the harsh reality of it and missing her own life afterwards very interesting though this visit gave me much more respect for dolly to see Anna regardless of the social taboo due to her love。 Anna throwing herself into reading is a form of escapism for Anna I feel as she is falling deeper into depression。 Anna and levin’s meeting was super fascinating how well they clicked how levin saw her as real because they are very similar we also see Anna’s mindset which is worsening while her life is one that would make her happy she is lacking the love she needs to feel good regardless of how much it seems people are giving it to her。 It leaves her more isolated then ever。 On the other hand Levin also seems unhappy with what he previously thought was everything he needed for happiness his oddness regarding his child and the going out more likely to fill a void the unsatisfactory worj he was doing left。 Anna’s depression was portrayed sooooo well the mindset was so realistic and while listening to the book I could feel her emotions and the intensity of the hopeless outlook on life, the depression goggles。 Her death was tender not hateful and it showed how she didn’t care for status of this death she could have taken drugs and had this death in a more controlled environment but she escapes the world in the world because she can’t stand either。 I really enjoyed that she was a loveable character to others throughout the novel regardless of her status and sadness it made it feel realer。 I just finished the novel and wow I feel rheres a lot to unpack and I don’t know where to start I want to reread it eventually。 I feel like it’s needed to truly appreciate the omincent narration。 It’s interesting Tolstoy’s perspective and way of facing this novel really giving a slice of life but ignoring city life because to him the city isn’t real life。 Each character is enamored with changing opinokns and thinking different things at different times and it just felt really realistic the way they would know something but act differently or something of the sort。 I love how it’s honest about the moments of hatred in deep love that are shown in all the characters。 It was interesting Levins philosophical questions at the end the almost jab at Anna’s living for her happiness not a higher cause in his relavabtions。 Idk。 Reread one day and think more。 。。。more

I’m giving this one solid 3 stars。 Tolstoy intricately weaves together multiple lives and has a talent for writing the inner depths of human experience。 There isn’t a single character whose motivations are not intimately explored and there are some chapters and passages that are the pinnacle of great writing。 However this book did not need to be this long! I could have cut at least a quarter of the chapters with no despair。 Kill your darlings Tolstoy。

I definitely don't think I am in any position to be rating Tolstoy's work, so those 4 stars just represent my enjoyment of reading the book。 It took me until about the halfway point of this to really get into it。 I wish I had made a character diagram to keep everyone straight。 There are so many things I just didn't know enough about (Russian politics, mostly) to really understand all the layers, but overall, I am glad I read the book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to read more c I definitely don't think I am in any position to be rating Tolstoy's work, so those 4 stars just represent my enjoyment of reading the book。 It took me until about the halfway point of this to really get into it。 I wish I had made a character diagram to keep everyone straight。 There are so many things I just didn't know enough about (Russian politics, mostly) to really understand all the layers, but overall, I am glad I read the book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to read more classics。 。。。more

I've finally finished Anna Karenina and I'm glad I got to the end。 Some bits of it, such as the chapters detailing the local elections and local politics I did find tedious though。 I felt that the main character was Levin and although he frustrated me at times he also made me smile sometimes and I was glad he had his epiphany in the end。 The other characters were just as much of a rollercoaster。 Enjoyable, but a slog occasionally。 5 stars because it's a great classic and who am I to argue with t I've finally finished Anna Karenina and I'm glad I got to the end。 Some bits of it, such as the chapters detailing the local elections and local politics I did find tedious though。 I felt that the main character was Levin and although he frustrated me at times he also made me smile sometimes and I was glad he had his epiphany in the end。 The other characters were just as much of a rollercoaster。 Enjoyable, but a slog occasionally。 5 stars because it's a great classic and who am I to argue with that? 。。。more

Predictably so, a gift to the soul。 “‘How beautiful!’ Levin thought, looking at the strange mother-of-pearl shell of white, fleecy clouds that stopped right over his head in the middle of the sky。 ‘How lovely everything is on this night! And when did that shell have time to form? A moment ago I looked at the sky, and there was nothing there—only two white strips。 Yes, and in that same imperceptible way my views of life have also changed!’”
